Barnard VT 05031 (802) 234- 9451 Looking for a place to take a vacation away from your everyday things. Then you may have found the location you are wanting to visit. Review things to bring along with you so you don’t forget anything. Silver Lake State Park offers camping facilities, including tent and Rv sites, as well as amenities such as restrooms, showers, and beach area. It’s recommended to make reservations in advance, especially during peak season. The park has a picnic pavilion that can be rented. there are two restrooms in the camping area with running water and coin operated showers. There is a sanitary station, but there are no hook ups. There is a large grassy area by the beach with a play area. There is also a snack bar, restrooms, changing rooms, and a boat and canoe rentals. Vermont State Parks often have an online reservation system where you can check availability and secure your camping spot. There are 39 tent Rv sites and 7 lean to sites. The park is popular its sandy swimming area, picnic grounds, and camping area. Its proximity to Woodstock and other central Vermont tourist destinations makes it ideal for family vacations. Locate a place to set up your campsite. Build a campfire and pitch your tent at a flat location. Have a cooler with food and beverages kept chilled. An Rv-camper with a generator in case there are no power hook-ups available. Maybe rent a cabin and there could be lodging in the area. There are multiple trails you can hike on ranging from 0.6 to 8.8 miles one way. The Silver Lake trails are in the southern portion of the Moosaloomoo Recreation area. The trails offer a diverse selection of low land valleys and creeks, and upland hills. Multiple trails are in this area with an average hike time 1-5 hours one way. Have boots or sneakers with good cushion soles to go trail hiking in any area. Canteens with cold water to drink along the trails. Plan your hiking trail adventures ahead of time so you have ample time for other things. Have a backpack with extra clothing and other things needed for hiking. Can set up a temporary overnight campsite and continue your trail hiking the next day. Mountain bike riding, ATV, horseback riding, walking, and jogging are popular activities. Horseback riding is available on the Silver Lake Trail and the Mini Baker trail. There are several trails that can be used in the wintertime for XC skiing/ snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. There may not be cell phone connection in some areas. Have a set of walkie talkies as a substitute for groups of campers to communicate with each other. Insect repellent for those nasty mosquitoes. Campfires smoke helps keep flying insects away from your campsite. Have a camera to take awesome photos of the scenery to look at later. A first aid kit in case ever needed. There are bears in the area and would be a good idea to store your food in bear resistant containers or hang them from a tree at a safe distance from your eating and sleeping area. Make noise while hiking to alert bears to your presence. This can help from surprising them, reducing the chance of sudden encounters. There are also white-tailed deer, eastern coyote, moose, eastern cotton tail rabbit, red fox, gray squirrel, racoon and an abundance of wild birds in the area also. The weather in Vermont can be unpredictable and be ready for the changing conditions. Check the weather before leaving to be sure your prepared such as rain gear and warm clothing even in the summer. While camping you should follow the principles of leave no trace. This means packing out all your trash, minimizing impact on the environment, and respecting the natural beauty beauty of the area. Have a canoe or kayak and go paddling around the lake and look at the scenery and enjoy the day. Wear a life jacket for safety purposes. Silver Lake is often suitable for non-motorized boating activities. Paddle boarding and windsailing are popular activities. Since the lake is relatively small and tranquil, it can a serene setting for those types of activities. Bring your fishing poles as there are many species of fish in the lake. Can fish from a boat or from along the shore. There are rainbow trout and brook trout, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, yellow perch, pumpkinseed sunfish. Be sure to follow local laws and you may need a fishing license. Take your catch back to your campsite and have a cookout over the campfire or grill for dinner. Have a couple containers, one with soapy water and the other with rinse water. Washing your dishes cuts the smell of food and you have clean dishes. There are animals in the woods that can smell your food from a distance and come to your campsite hungry. Try not to leave food out while away from your campsite or at night when people are sleeping. Store your food in a vehicle to prevent animals from getting into your food. Lay out in the sun on hot summer days and get a suntan and then take a dip in the water to cool off. Take a swim at night and the water feels warmer. Have an innertube or raft and play around in the water or just relax. Can go tubing downstream on a river and float on the current and enjoy the day. There are many activities such as corn hole, ring toss, and horseshoes. Play board games or cards. Throw around a football or frisbee. Play catch with a ball and glove. Groups of campers can play softball or baseball. There are playgrounds at the park for the children to play on. They can play laser tag or hide and seek at night. Have a telescope to look at the stars and constellations. Can skip stones on a river or lake. Kids can build sandcastles on any sand at the beach or playground. Have a bucket and a small shovel. Have a picnic on a blanket or at the picnic table. Take long walks on paths or trails and look at the scenery. Lay on a hammock to relax and maybe read a book. Groups of campers can play volleyball or soccer. Prepare an assortment of easy to eat foods that don’t require any utensil use. Fruits, salads, sandwiches, and finger foods are a great option. Don’t forget to pack some drinks and refreshing water. Don’t forget to have sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, to protect yourself from the sun’s rays. Pet Policy- Dogs are allowed and must be kept on a leash no longer than 6 feet. Clean up after your dog and have a trash bag to dispose of waste properly. Pets should be well behaved and under control at all times. Barking and aggressive behavior can disturb other visitors and wildlife.
